Widespread traffic to site blows away competition
The PGA Tour of Australasia website (, a site developed collaboratively between PowerServe, a provider of global software solutions and Sportal, an international sports media company, has received unparalleled success on a global scale, out trafficking leading sports sites including NineMSN and Shark Challenge.

In a mere four weeks of activity, the site generated a staggering 1.7 million page views, an estimated 85,000 unique users, was awarded website of the week (The Age, 6/2), was ranked the seventh most popular Australian sports site (Top 100) and the 57th most trafficked website in Australia according to

The site was launched in conjunction with the PGA Tour’s Heineken Classic held in Western Australia in late January with pre-launch predictions estimating 100,000 page views of the site for each of the five tour tournaments.

In reality, the site, which is hosted by PowerServe, reached this goal of 500,000 page views for the competitive season prior to the start of the third tournament.

On a single day of the Australian Ericsson Masters (Melbourne, 10-13 February), the site received a record 219,991 page views. Over the four days of the competition, 529,639 page views were recorded.

The popularity of Melbourne as a golfing destination online and off may emphasise Heineken’s decision to move the Perth based Heineken Classic to Melbourne in 2001.

The Ericsson Masters was the most popular tournament for online participation throughout the PGA Tour of Australasia season with two sites developed to specifically cater the high quantity of expected traffic.

The site left the Erricsson/International Management Group designed website, in the dust with dramatically higher traffic recoded.

Top 100 ranked the PGA Tour site at number one for the third consecutive week, with the Ericsson/IMG site ranked as the fifth most frequented golf site behind Ausgolf ( and Ozgolf Interactive (

General Manager of Sportal (Australia), Mr Chris Hume said: “The impact made by high traffic to the PGA Tour site confirms Australia as a sports crazy country.”

“The success of this golfing site will be mimicked by other sports channels and associations within the next three months as PowerServe and Sportal continue to develop other high quality sports sites and an Australian sports portal.”

According to Top 100 (, an internet site performance aggregator, the PGA Tour site was consecutively for the tournament period, the most trafficked golf site in the world by Australians.

The site received more Australian traffic than any other PGA Tour site including the US Tour (, European Tour ( and the Professional Golfers Association site ( and also out-trafficked popular golfing sites including Shark Challenge ( and

Australia drove 54.28% of the site’s traffic, establishing as an international destination.
A selection of other countries predominant with traffic to the site included: the United States with 21.18% traffic, New Zealand with 8.10%, Japan with 3.02% and Tonga with 2.51%.

Other countries frequenting the site included: the United Kingdom, Sweden, South Africa, Denmark, Singapore, Germany, United Arab Emirates, Ireland, Sao Tome and the Netherlands
